Tasting Room POS Serve More Guests, Faster Wine Clubs Recurring Bottles, Lasting Relationships Website & eCommerce Keep the Conversation GoingSquare is general-purpose point-of-sale software used across retail, food service and thousands of other business types. It processes payments well. It has no concept of a wine club, an allocation, or a guest who visits four times a year and needs to be recognized on the fifth. Here's what changes when a tasting room outgrows it.
Square runs the till. It doesn't run a wine club.
Square is a general-purpose point-of-sale and payments platform, not a winery-specific one. It handles card payments, basic inventory and item sales reliably across almost any business type. It has no native wine club, allocation or guest-loyalty layer built for tasting rooms. Wineries that start on Square because it's fast to set up often outgrow it once they need club billing, guest segmentation or event ticketing. Vintiga is built specifically for that stage: club, guest intelligence and reservations included from day one.
Square wasn't built for wineries, and it doesn't claim to be. Most tasting rooms that use it chose it for how fast it was to set up, not because it modeled a wine club, an allocation or a repeat guest. The moment those things matter, the gap shows up.
Square's point-of-sale software is free to use; Square charges a percentage-plus-fixed-fee on each transaction, with optional paid plan tiers for additional features. Square pricing
Square serves a broad range of business types — retail, restaurants, services and more — rather than a wine or hospitality-specific product line. Square
Wine club billing, allocation management and guest-visit history are not native Square concepts; wineries typically bolt on a separate club or CRM tool, or manage them manually. Vintiga analysis
What this means in practice. Square is not a bad product — it's a general-purpose one, and general-purpose tools don't model industry-specific relationships like club tiers or allocations without a second system bolted on. That second system is usually where the manual work piles up: a spreadsheet tracking who's in which club tier, a separate email tool that doesn't know who bought what in the tasting room last weekend.
Tiers, recurring billing and allocations in the same system as your sales.
One profile across POS, club and website, so staff know who's at the bar.
Square keeps taking payments while Vintiga runs club, guests and bookings. Move the POS later, or never.
The differences that change the workday, not just the feature list.

The POS decision is the one wineries put off. Keeping Square for payments while adding Vintiga for club, guest and reservations is a normal starting point — the POS move happens later, on your schedule, once the rest of the system has proven itself.
Said plainly, not softened. If a tool below is central to how you run the winery, it stays exactly where it is.
Vintiga does not pick, pack or ship. Whoever handles fulfilment for you today stays exactly where it is.
Vintiga does not file your state reports. Sovos ShipCompliant or your equivalent stays in place.
No barrel tracking, no blending, no harvest data. InnoVint, vintrace and similar tools are unaffected.
QuickBooks stays. Payroll is not on the roadmap.
“Square Point of Sale software is free — you only pay when you take a payment.”
Square, describing its own pricing — squareup.com
Not natively. Square has no built-in concept of club tiers, allocations or recurring club billing tied to a wine list. Wineries running a club on Square typically manage it in a separate tool or by hand.
Square's base software is free, with a per-transaction fee on payments. Whether it's cheaper depends on what else you're paying for separately — a club tool, an email platform, a booking system — to cover what Square doesn't include.
No. Many wineries run Vintiga for club, guest intelligence and reservations while keeping Square for payments, then move POS over later if it makes sense.
Customer and product records are imported as part of onboarding. Because Square doesn't track club or allocation data natively, there's typically nothing club-related to migrate — it starts fresh in Vintiga.
Not as a built-in feature. It would require a separate booking tool. Vintiga includes reservations and ticketing natively, with deposits and no-show protection.
Square charges per transaction with optional paid tiers. Vintiga is one flat monthly price by annual DTC revenue: $279/mo at under $250K, $479/mo at $250K–$1M, $749/mo at $1M–$2M, a custom quote at $2M+. A one-time setup fee applies, migration and onboarding are quoted separately, and there is no commission on DTC sales.
Most wineries are fully live within two weeks, running Vintiga alongside Square from the start.
